A classroom holiday party lasts about an hour and involves 20 to 30 excited kids. Usually there's one or two adults and very little space. The best classroom party games let the whole class play at once, need little setup, and calm down as easily as they start.
Why bingo works so well
Bingo works well as a classroom party game:
- Everyone plays at once. There's no waiting for a turn.
- It's easy to calm down. Kids have to listen for the next call.
- It works for every age. Use word cards for readers and picture cards for preschool and kindergarten.
- It's cheap to run. Mini marshmallows, cereal or buttons make great markers.
Use cards where every layout is different, so you don't get ten winners at once. Have the caller tick off each word on a checklist so checking a winner takes seconds.
A simple 60-minute party plan
- Welcome and snack (15 minutes). Put a picture scavenger hunt sheet at each seat so early finishers have something to do.
- Christmas bingo (20 minutes). Play two or three rounds with new patterns: four corners, an X, a full card.
- Movement game (10 minutes). Christmas charades, or "pass the present" with a story read aloud.
- Craft or coloring (10 minutes). A calm activity to finish.
- Clean-up and goodbye (5 minutes).
Picture bingo for younger grades
Preschool and kindergarten kids can play with 4×4 picture cards: a tree, a snowman, a mitten. Hold up the calling card so kids can match the picture. It's a quiet pre-reading game.
Scavenger hunts for the classroom
Hide pictures of holiday items around the room, or hand out a "find it" checklist for the hallway or library (with permission!). Team up readers with non-readers.
Room parent tips
- Ask the teacher about allergies before choosing any food markers.
- Pre-cut everything at home. Cutting is the slowest part.
- Bring a few small prizes, enough that everyone can win one eventually.
- Print a few extra cards for surprise visitors and siblings.
