New Year's Eve Games for Kids (Plus an Early "Midnight" Plan)

Game Night Paper Co. · 2026-10-19

Most kids can't make it to midnight, and that's fine. A New Year's Eve party for kids just needs a countdown, a few games and a big moment to cheer for, even if that moment is at 9 PM. Here's how to plan it.

The secret: countdown activity cards

Make a set of envelopes or treat bags, one for every 30 minutes from 7:00 PM. Each one holds an activity: a dance party, a round of bingo, a craft, a snack, a photo hunt. Kids open one each time the clock hits the half hour. They always know what's next, so you hear "I'm bored" a lot less.

Early midnight: relabel the last envelope for 9:00 PM. Cue the noisemakers, confetti and a fake ball drop (a balloon on a string works great).

7 NYE games kids love

1. New Year's Eve bingo

Bingo with words like confetti, countdown, party hat and fireworks. Use different card layouts so there's one winner at a time.

2. My predictions time capsule

Kids fill out a card: What will I learn next year? How tall will I be? Seal the cards in an envelope and open them next New Year's Eve. It's a favorite with families who make it a tradition.

3. New Year's Would You Rather

"Would you rather stay up until midnight or wake up at sunrise?" Easy for little ones, and fun for grown-ups too.

4. Balloon countdown

Put a slip of paper inside each balloon with an activity on it. Pop one every hour.

5. Midnight photo scavenger hunt

Hand out a list of photos to take: a silly face, everyone in party hats, the clock at 8:00. Older kids can use a family phone or tablet.

6. Freeze dance

Play music and freeze when it stops. Anyone who moves sits out until the next song.

7. Year in review sheet

A quick fill-in: favorite memory, best thing I learned, a goal for next year. Read the answers at the countdown.
